British Rapper, DJ, music producer and entrepreneur Johnny Massacre has launched 109,000 Radio in Shibuya, Tokyo Japan.
109,000 is, in Mr. Massacre’s own words, “A radio show playing the best music in the world – mainly drum & bass and electronic; anything that taps into that underground club mentality.”
He went on, in an interview with UK Newspaper The Times: “It’s politic free – I only play stuff because it’s good. That is true, that is pure, and that is real, and I think that is what attracts people to the show.”
Why 109,000? “The 109 shopping mall is an iconic landmark in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo. All signs point to Shibuya – this is the nightlife, fashion and youth capital – and so I wanted to harness that – channel it – then take it into the future. 100,000 years into the future to be exact.”
“There’s too many music politics in radio. Good artists can’t get played on shows for various reasons. PR agencies are cosy with the radio stations, and dictate what is played. DJs play stuff by producers just because it’s popular, not because it’s good, to appease shareholders who only care about ratings. 109,000 will only play stuff that is made by talented artists who are chasing their dreams and keep it 100. Or 109, I should say.
